Wan 2.5 Is Not Open Source: Weights, API and Local Options
Wan 2.5 has no public weights. What Alibaba released under Apache 2.0, where Wan 2.5 runs as a paid API, and the closest model you can run locally.
Quick answer
Wan 2.5 is not open source. As of 2026-10-09 its weights are not published on Hugging Face, ModelScope or GitHub, and Alibaba has made no public statement that they will be. You can use it only through Alibaba Cloud's API. The last general-purpose Wan models you can download are Wan 2.1 and Wan 2.2, both under the Apache 2.0 licence.

If you want a Wan model on your own GPU today, it is Wan 2.2. Wan's README says its 5B model "can also run on consumer-grade graphics cards like 4090"; the 14B models are a larger pair of files. Start with Wan 2.2 VRAM requirements.
We checked each official channel directly on 2026-10-09. The details are below, with every source listed at the end.
What Alibaba released openly, and when
Wan's own GitHub READMEs give the release dates. Wan 2.1's inference code and weights were released on 25 February 2025. Wan 2.2's followed on 28 July 2025, then Wan2.2-S2V-14B on 26 August 2025 and Wan2.2-Animate-14B on 19 September 2025.
The Wan 2.2 README states: "The models in this repository are licensed under the Apache 2.0 License." Every model repository in the Wan- organisation on Hugging Face carries the apache- tag.
The Wan- organisation holds 27 model repositories. All of them are Wan 2.1 or Wan 2.2 builds, or two later task-specific 14B models:
- Wan-Dancer-14B, created on Hugging Face on 10 July 2026. Its README describes generating dance videos from music.
- Wan2.2-Animate-2-14B, with base and distilled weights released on 7 August 2026, according to its GitHub README. It is a character animation model.
Neither is a general text-to-video or image-to-video model, and neither is called Wan 2.5. The Wan- organisation on ModelScope lists the same family of 30 models, also with no Wan 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 or 3.0 entry.
The Wan- organisation on GitHub has six repositories: Wan2.1, Wan2.2, a fork of diffusers, Wan-, Wan- and Wan-. The last one is a set of agent skills that call the wan2.7-image model through Alibaba Cloud's API with your own API key. It contains no model weights.
What happened with Wan 2.5
Alibaba Cloud's press release of 24 September 2025, from its Apsara Conference, says Alibaba "previewed four Wan2.5 models, including its latest video generation models, an image generation model and an image editing model". It says the video models generate audio natively and double clip length from 5 to 10 seconds.
The same release says Alibaba has open-sourced over 300 models built on Qwen and Wan. It does not say Wan 2.5 will be one of them, and it does not mention weights for Wan 2.5 at all.
The Wan 2.2 README's news list ends on 13 November 2025 and has no Wan 2.5 entry.
Users have asked directly. Two issues on the Wan 2.2 GitHub repository, "Is WAN 2.5 going to be open source?" (opened 24 September 2025) and "Wan 2.5 weights? Will be open-sourced?" (opened 2 December 2025), are still open. Neither has a reply from a member of the Wan team; every comment in both threads is from outside users.
So the status is not "coming soon" and not "cancelled". There is no official statement either way. Any article giving a release date for Wan 2.5 weights is not quoting Alibaba, as far as we could find.
Where you can use Wan 2.5
Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, also called Bailian, serves Wan 2.5 through its video generation API. The model IDs are wan2.5- for text to video and wan2.5- for image to video. Both were still listed in the API reference and on the pricing page on 2026-10-09.
What the API reference says about wan2.5-:
- Duration is 5 or 10 seconds, default 5.
- Resolutions are all sizes in the 480p, 720p and 1080p tiers, default 1920×1080.
- It generates video with audio by default. You can pass your own audio file or let it generate sound.
- It uses the API's older request protocol, the one that covers wan2.6 and earlier.
Prices from the Model Studio pricing page, Singapore region, per second of output video:
| Model | 480P | 720P | 1080P |
|---|---|---|---|
Modelwan2.5- | 480P$0.05 | 720P$0.10 | 1080P$0.15 |
Modelwan2.5- | 480P$0.05 | 720P$0.10 | 1080P$0.15 |
The same page lists a free quota of 50 seconds for each model in Singapore only, valid for 90 days, and says failed requests are not charged. The Beijing region prices are listed separately in US dollars, at $0.043006, $0.086012 and $0.143353 per second. Prices change; check the page before you budget.
Wan's README links to wan as Wan's own site. We did not confirm which model versions that site offers today. Other companies also resell access to Wan models through their own APIs. We have not checked their terms, and what they offer is between you and them.
Wan 2.6, 2.7 and 3.0 follow the same pattern
Model Studio's text-to-video API reference, last updated 28 September 2026, lists wan2.6- and wan2.7- alongside the Wan 2.5 preview. Its model list includes wan3.0-. Alibaba Cloud's product news says Wan3.0 launched on Model Studio on 24 August 2026; it does not mention weights or downloads.
None of these versions has a repository under Wan- on Hugging Face or ModelScope, or under Wan- on GitHub.
Beware of "Wan 2.5" downloads
Because there are no official weights, anything offered as a Wan 2.5 download did not come from Alibaba's channels. What we saw on 2026-10-09:
- A Hugging Face search for "Wan2.5" returns one repository,
Hiren122/. It was created on 29 December 2025 and contains a singleWan- 2.5 .gitattributesfile of 1,519 bytes. There is no model in it, and it shows 0 downloads. - A search for "wan2.6" returns two repositories in the same state: one
.gitattributesfile each. - A search for "wan3" returns, among others,
wanvideo/. It is a personal account created on 4 September 2026, not thewan- 3- 0- video Wan-organisation. The repository has a README and no weights, and the README points to a separate website, not to Alibaba.AI - Several websites use Wan version numbers in their domain names. The official links are the ones in Wan's GitHub README:
wan,.video huggingface,.co/ Wan- AI modelscopeand.cn/ organization/ Wan- AI github..com/ Wan- Video
Wan 2.1 and Wan 2.2 were published under Wan- on Hugging Face and ModelScope, with code and an Apache 2.0 licence on GitHub and an entry in the README's news list. A file that is only on a third-party site, an installer, or a repository outside Wan- did not come through those channels.
What you can run locally instead
Wan 2.2 is the closest open model. In ComfyUI it comes as two families:
- TI2V-5B, one 10.00 GB file that does text and image to video. ComfyUI's documentation says it should fit on 8 GB of VRAM with native offloading.
- T2V-A14B and I2V-A14B, a pair of 14.29 GB FP8 experts per task in the official templates, with smaller GGUF builds from the community.
What you give up is what Alibaba announced as new in Wan 2.5. Its API reference describes wan2.2- as silent and fixed at 5 seconds, against sound by default and 5 or 10 seconds for wan2.5-.
- File sizes and what each card size can start with: Wan 2.2 VRAM requirements.
- Which folder each file goes in: Wan 2.2 ComfyUI models folder.
- Installing ComfyUI itself: ComfyUI download.
- On a 12 GB card: AI video models on an RTX 3060 12GB.
- To check your GPU and system RAM: the system requirements checker.
What we could not confirm
- Any official plan for Wan 2.5 weights. We found no statement from Alibaba or the Wan team that they will or will not be released.
- Wan 2.6 and 2.7 release dates. The API documents list the model IDs but not the date each was first offered.
- What
wanserves today. We did not sign in, so we cannot say which versions its web app offers or what it charges..video - Whether any third-party "Wan 2.5" file is a real model. We found none on Hugging Face. We did not download or run files from any other site, and we do not recommend doing so.
When Alibaba publishes Wan 2.5 weights or a statement about them, this page will change to quote it.
We do not host any Wan files and do not run Wan 2.5 for visitors.
